Shire of Kerang

Proclaimed on 31 December 1898, the Shire of Kerang covered Kerang and what is now the northern and western sections of Gannawarra Shire.

Prior to this date, these areas were part of the Swan Hill District Roads Board, which covered most of north-western Victoria. On 14 August 1871, this board was proclaimed the Shire of Swan Hill.

During the late 1800s, areas of the Shire of Swan Hill were servered to become new municipalities. These included Shire of Gordon (12 May 1885), Shire of Mildura (10 January 1890), Shire of Castle Donnington (30 May 1893) and Shire of Kerang (31 December 1898).

Parts of the Shire of Kerang's North East and South East Ridings were served on 8 March 1922, becoming the Shire of Cohuna.

Kerang residents successfully voted for the formation of the Borough of Kerang, which was proclaimed on 1 April 1966.

The Shire of Kerang's South West Riding grew on 5 July 1977 after the Shire of Gordon annexed part of its northern boundary.
