Cedar Lane naming process nominated for Victorian geographic award

Gannawarra Shire Council’s work with the community to determine the name of an unnamed road east of Kerang’s central business district has been nominated for a major geographical award.
A four-month engagement campaign that resulted in the unnamed road that connects Kerang-Koondrook Road and Lower Murray Water’s Kerang wastewater treatment facility being named Cedar Lane is in the running for the 2025 Geographic Names Victoria Excellence in Geographic Place Names Awards.
“Council is honoured to be nominated for this award, especially in recognition for our work with the community in determining the name of this previously unnamed road,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.
“The process we undertook to determine the final name for Cedar Lane is now the benchmark we strive for when determining the names of Council assets, and highlights our commitment to responsible naming practices, cultural sensitivity and stakeholder engagement.”
The process to name the unnamed road began in June 2024 after Council received a request for the road to be named White Cedar Lane, recognising the deciduous Australian native that is found throughout eastern Australia.
Council initially asked residents for their views on the proposal during June and July that year, which resulted in 16 names recognising historic family links to the area, fauna and flora suggested as alternatives.
Residents were then asked during July and August 2024 to state their top three preferred naming options from a shortlist of 12 names that aligned with Victorian Department of Transport and Planning guidelines and Council’s Asset Naming policy and procedure, with Council ratifying Cedar Lane as the road’s name in September 2024.
“Being recognised as part of these awards highlights the efforts undertaken by our staff to work with the community to select a name for this road,” Mr Rollinson said.
Award winners will be announced in early October.
