Cohuna road safety improvements to begin soon

Work will soon begin on two road safety improvement projects that will benefit Cohuna residents and visitors to Apex Park.

Gannawarra Shire Council has awarded Mawson Constructions Pty Ltd of Kialla the $1.078 million tender for two projects being delivered as part of the Safer Local Roads and Streets Program.

Made possible through funding from the Victorian Government, which has committed $210 million to improving the safety of local roads across the state, the tender includes improvements to the intersections of Cohuna Island and Tennis roads, and Channel and Market streets.

“The Safer Local Roads and Streets Program is already benefiting residents and visitors at two locations in Kerang, and these works will provide the same reassurance for the Cohuna community and visitors at the two locations where improvements will occur,” Council Chief Executive Officer Geoff Rollinson said.

“Council thanks the Transport Accident Commission and Department of Transport and Planning for providing funding through the Safer Local Roads and Streets Program. These works would not be possible without this support or would otherwise require significant long-term financial planning and investment from Council.”

As part of the works, the roundabout at the intersection of Cohuna Island and Tennis roads will be reconstructed, with raised pedestrian crossings added to improve safety for people accessing Apex Park.

Work will also occur to install a roundabout at the intersection of Channel and Market streets. This project will include raised road humps, an indented accessible parking bay and infrastructure improvements to enhance pedestrian access around the site.

“These improvements are designed to slow traffic, improve driver awareness and make it safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists to move through these key intersections,” Mr Rollinson said

“Council is aiming for both projects to be completed by mid-December, ensuring minimal disruption during the busy Christmas and summer holiday period.”

Five new LED streetlights will also be installed on existing electrical poles at each location, improving visibility for motorists and pedestrians.

“While the lighting works contribute to the overall project cost, they are necessary to ensure compliance with relevant design standards, improve visibility of pedestrians and traffic-calming treatments, and provide a safer environment for all road users,” Mr Rollinson said.

The Safer Local Roads and Streets Program will also support the installation of a roundabout, raised pedestrian crossings and speed-reduction measures at the intersection of Maxwell, Shadforth and Wyndham streets, Kerang. Details regarding start dates and changed traffic conditions will be announced closer to the commencement of these works.
