Cohuna road safety improvement works to begin
Published on 21 October 2026
Work on two road safety improvement projects that will benefit Cohuna residents and visitors to Apex Park has started.
Preliminary works are underway at the intersections of Cohuna Island and Tennis roads, along with Channel and Market streets, with the improvements forming part of the Safer Local Roads and Streets Program.
Made possible through funding from the Victorian Government, which has committed $210 million to improving the safety of local roads across the state, the projects follow similar improvements completed in Kerang earlier this year.
“The Safer Local Roads and Streets Program is already benefiting residents and visitors at two locations in Kerang, and Council is excited to see similar road safety improvement works commence in Cohuna,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.
“Council acknowledges the significant contribution of the Transport Accident Commission and Department of Transport and Planning through the Safer Local Roads and Streets Program. The funding support has enabled these works to proceed, which would otherwise require significant long-term financial planning and investment from Council.”

Construction works will begin next week at the intersection of Channel and Market streets. These works will include the development of a roundabout at the intersection, along with the installation of raised road humps, the creation of an indented accessible parking bay and other infrastructure improvements that will enhance vehicle and pedestrian movements at the site.
Motorists are advised that this intersection will be closed for periods of time from Monday, 26 October until the end of the year to allow works to safely proceed. Detours will be in place directing vehicles around the site, while pedestrian access will remain available throughout the works.
Construction will also begin next week at the intersection of Cohuna Island and Tennis Roads. These improvements will involve the reconstruction of the roundabout’s outbound lane and installation of raised pedestrian crossings to improve safety for people accessing Apex Park. Traffic flow will be maintained via a single lane and traffic lights, with a short full-road closure required towards the end of the works.
“Council thanks residents and motorists for their understanding as these works occur and looks forward to the completion of these projects,” Mr Rollinson said.
Council will provide updates regarding these works via its website, its Gannawarra News publication and its Facebook page.
