Gannawarra Shire Council is reminding dog and cat owners of their responsibilities when their pets are out in public and around the home.

Council has received an increase in reports of roaming cats, as well as concerns about dog owners failing to clean up after their pets in public spaces.

Under Council's Community Amenity Local Law 2023, any person who has a cat or dog on Council land must carry materials that enable them to remove animal litter and must immediately clean up any litter left by their pet.

"Spending time outdoors with your dog is an enjoyable experience, especially as we enter the warmer months of the year," Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

"Leaving dog litter behind is not only unsightly, but it can also create health risks, impact the environment and reduce the enjoyment of shared community spaces for other residents and visitors.

“While there are dog litter bag dispensers located at many of Council’s parks and reserves, pet owners are encouraged to do the right thing and carry bags to clean up after their dog."

Meanwhile, cat owners are encouraged to keep their pets contained to their property to help protect native wildlife and improve their cat's safety and wellbeing.

"Keeping your cat safe and happy at home is an important part of being a responsible pet owner," Mr Rollinson said.

"Studies have shown that cats who roam can travel up to two kilometres from home and may kill or injure native wildlife, fight with other cats and leave litter in neighbouring gardens.

"Allowing your cat to roam can also reduce its lifespan due to dangers such as traffic, predators, disease and extreme weather conditions."

Cat owners can help contain their pets by:

  • Making their apartment, unit or house more cat-friendly.
  • Building a cat enclosure or cat run or installing cat-proof fencing.
  • Providing regular playtime and environmental enrichment to keep their cat stimulated and active.
