Residents were encouraged during October 2025 and November 2025 to have their say on Gannawarra Shire Council's draft 2026-2029 Domestic Animal Management Plan, which outlines how Council’s animal management services will be managed during the next four years.

Presented at the October 2025 Council meeting for endorsement to proceed to the community engagement stage, Council's draft 2026-2029 Domestic Animal Management Plan supports animal welfare, minimises wildlife impacts from cats and dogs, and ensures sustainable management of domestic animals across the municipality.

As part of the development of the draft plan, current practices were reviewed against plans from other councils and community feedback received during the past three results, with the draft document outlining the following changes to be made during the next four years:

  • Establishing a training register for Authorised Officers;
  • Expanding community education programs;
  • Strengthening registration and identification strategies, including incentives;
  • Enhancing compliance programs for nuisance animals and illegal breeders and
  • Developing an improved annual evaluation mechanism.
