Swimming pool and spa registration

On 1 December 2019, new laws to improve swimming pool and spa safety came into effect in Victoria.

It is now mandatory for owners of land to register their swimming pool or spa with their local council and have their safety barrier inspected once every four years. This includes any pool, spa or relocatable pool that is in place more than three consecutive days, with a depth more than 300mm.

Pools and spas are required to be registered by 1 November 2020.

Failure to register swimming pool or spa within the relevant timeframe may incur a fine of up to $1,652.20.

Steps to register

To complete an application to register your pool or spa, please enter required information to the Greenlight portal. The required evidence documents can be attached within the portal.

Registration fees

Payment of fees is required for lodgement of the application.

Registration fee                                $ 34.20

Information Search Fee*                  $ 50.70

Payment options are outlined in Greenlight and are shown on the application.

*If correct evidence documents are not provided, payment of the Information Search Fee is required.

Approval

After registering your pool or spa, Council will send you written notification confirming:

  • That your pool or spa has been registered;
  • The date of construction of your pool or spa and the applicable barrier standard;
  • Your right to appeal to the Building Appeals Board (BAB) in relation to the council’s determination of the date of construction of the pool or spa; and
  • The date by which the first or next certificate of barrier compliance must be lodged with Council.
