Bookings are filling fast for Detox Your Home’s visit to Kerang, occurring at the Kerang Transfer Station on Sunday, 19 April from 1pm-4pm.

This popular Sustainability Victoria program will enable resident to dispose of unused household chemicals for free and safely.

“The Detox Your Home program is a convenient way to safely remove toxic chemicals and hard to recycle materials from your property,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

“Expert chemists will be on-site to identify and sort all chemicals handed in for safe transport back to a licensed facility in Melbourne where they are processed for reuse or safe disposal. Chemicals collected are processed and recovered or recycled wherever possible, and if they cannot be reused in any way, they are safely disposed of.”

Around 40 regular household items will be accepted for disposal, including:

  • Cleaning products, including acids and alkalis, including bleach, rust remover, and hydrochloric acid, and oven cleaner.
  • Garden materials, such as fertiliser, fuel (old lawn mower/power tools fuel), weed killers/herbicides, insect sprays and pesticides, and pool chemicals.
  • Garage materials, including brake fluid, coolant, fuels including petrol, diesel and kerosene, machine oil and lubricant.

Items that will not be accepted for collection include ammunition or firearms, asbestos, batteries, chemicals used by businesses and farms, empty aerosols and oils, including cooking oil, gas bottles and paint.

“There is no limit on the volume of materials you can drop-off, however the maximum acceptable weight or size of any single container is 20 kilograms or 20 litres,” Mr Rollinson said.

“Decanting is not permitted, so please bring chemicals in disposable containers.”
