Motorists are advised to beware of an increasing number of machinery on Gannawarra Shire Council’s roads from October as Council begins its annual roadside weed slashing program.

A key component of Council’s weed management and fire prevention efforts, at least two rounds of slashing will occur along the edges of Council-managed roads during the coming months.

“Cooler and wetter than average conditions during winter and early spring have promoted the growth of weeds along our rural roads, which can become a fire hazard during summer,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.

“These efforts are important to our rural landowners and residents, as it reduces the risk of fire and ensures greater management of weeds.”

At least one crew, consisting of two tractors and slashers, will be undertaking slashing work, with signage advising motorists of these efforts to be displayed close to slashing locations.

“Motorists are reminded to pass by any slashing works with caution, being mindful that these tractors may need to encroach on the road whilst undertaking these important works,” Mr O’Reilly said.

Anyone with questions regarding Council’s roadside slashing program is encouraged to contact Council on (03) 5450 9333.
