Revised Artwork and Public Art policy adopted
Published on 19 September 2025
The broadcast of digital displays on The Glasshouse’s façade at Kerang’s Sir John Gorton Library will be guided by the updated version of Gannawarra Shire Council’s Artwork and Public Art policy.
Adopted at Council’s September 2025 meeting, the revised policy provides a transparent and accountable decision-making process regarding the design, placement and conservation of artworks on Council-managed land within the municipality.
“The Gannawarra is renowned for its creative arts programs, highlighted by local exhibitions, artistic signage and murals, and the popular Rotary Club of Kerang Easter Art Show,” Mayor Garner Smith said.
“Council’s revised Artwork and Public Art policy provides a framework to support Council’s commitment to the inclusion of artistic works in its urban strategic planning, as well as the cataloguing of art commissioned or acquired by Council, and the permanent or temporary display of works.”
The revised policy features for the first time a section specific to the use of Council-owned digital displays and public lighting, which include The Glasshouse’s façade at Kerang’s Sir John Gorton Library and lighting at various locations, including Cohuna’s Garden Park, the Karlie McDonald Memorial Clock at Kerang and outside the Kerang Council Building.
As outlined in the policy, displays at these locations will be reserved exclusively for communicating Council-endorsed messages. These include for Council programs, services and events, recognised seasonal holidays, strategic initiatives aligned with Council’s priorities, and emergency and public safety messaging.
“Art has a positive impact on communities and Council is committed to working with artists and local creatives to facilitate art projects that inspire creativity, build identity and celebrate sustainability in public spaces,” Mayor Smith said.
