Residents and motorists will benefit from five proposed road safety improvement projects scheduled to proceed in 2026 thanks to the State Government.

Gannawarra Shire Council has received confirmation that works at two locations at Cohuna and three sites at Kerang will proceed to the next stage of planning thanks to the Victorian Government though the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program, which is providing $210 million to improve the safety of local roads across Victoria.

As part of the works:

  • Improvements will be made to the intersection of Cohuna Island and Tennis roads, Cohuna, including the installation of raised pedestrian crossings either side of Apex Park.
  • A roundabout and speed reduction measures will be installed at the intersection of Channel and Market streets, Cohuna.
  • The school crossing at Boundary Street, Kerang, near Mitchell Street will be replaced with a raised priority crossing to improve pedestrian safety and increase visibility.
  • A roundabout, raised pedestrian crossings and speed reduction measures will be placed at the intersection of Maxwell, Shadforth and Wyndham streets, Kerang.
  • Speed reduction measures will be placed along Wyndham Street, Kerang, either side of Victoria Street

“Council thanks the Transport Accident Commission and Department of Transport and Planning for providing funding via its Safer Local Roads and Streets Program to improve the safety of Council-managed roads in the municipality,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

“This funding will be used to undertake road safety improvements that would not have been possible without significant financial planning or additional support from our State or Federal counterparts.”

While these projects have received grant approval, their final delivery will depend on the prices received during the upcoming tender process. Council will confirm which projects proceed once tenders have been evaluated.

Council worked with residents, local transport operators and school bus drivers in late 2024 and early 2025 to gather feedback on eight potential projects. The five projects selected for grant funding were chosen based on this community input and the State Government’s assessment.

“Community feedback was pivotal to our campaign for these upgrades, which will make walking and driving in these areas safer and easier for everyone,” Mr Rollinson said.

Updates regarding each of these projects will be published on Council’s website and Facebook page, as well as via its Gannawarra Connect and Gannawarra News publications.
