Protecting the Gannawarra's roadside native vegetation
Published on 06 March 2026
Gannawarra Shire Council is reminding residents and landowners that native vegetation on roadsides is protected and plays an important role in supporting biodiversity, preventing erosion and maintaining the Gannawarra’s rural character.
Council has received numerous complaints regarding the removal of vegetation within the municipality, including on road reserves. These matters are being taken seriously and are currently under review.
“Roadside vegetation is often the last remaining native habitat corridor in rural landscapes. It provides essential shelter and food sources for wildlife, supports native bird and pollinator species, assists with wind reduction and soil stability, and contributes significantly to the visual amenity of our farming districts,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.
“Under the Planning and Environment Act 1987, the removal, destruction or lopping of native vegetation generally requires a planning permit unless a specific exemption applies. This includes vegetation located on road reserves, which is public land managed for the benefit of the broader community.”
Landowners and residents are encouraged to seek advice to determine whether any permits are required before undertaking any works involving native vegetation, including grading, fence line clearing, access works or fire prevention activities.
“Unauthorised removal of native vegetation may result in enforcement action and penalties. However, Council’s priority is to work collaboratively with landholders to provide clear guidance and support informed decision-making,” Mr Rollinson said.
Residents who observe suspected unlawful removal of roadside native vegetation are encouraged to report the matter to Council so it can be appropriately investigated.
“By working together, we can protect and enhance the environmental values that are vital to the health, productivity and character of our rural communities,” Mr Rollinson said.
