Leng Street, Kerang drainage works completed

Residents living in the southern area of Kerang are benefiting from recently completed works that have provided an additional connection point between the town’s stormwater network and the Loddon River.
Work occurred throughout June and July connecting the Leng Street section of Kerang’s stormwater network to an outlet located on the western side of the Murray Valley Highway.
“Council thanks residents along Leng Street and motorists for their patience as these important works were completed,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.
“As we have seen with previous major rainfall events, like those that occurred during Christmas Day 2023 and early January 2024, there is limited ability for stormwater to flow from Kerang’s drainage network to our tributaries due to the town’s flood protection levee.
“The works completed along Leng Street are already benefiting residents in the southern part of Kerang, with the additional outlet to the Loddon River first used late last month when the town received close to a month’s worth of rain in 72 hours.”
Meanwhile, work is occurring to prepare the municipality’s urban stormwater network for spring and summer with drains being cleared regularly and the network’s 26 pump sites monitored throughout the year.
“Staff perform an inspection of each pump site every Friday, checking for serviceability and to detect any issues that may affect pump operations. While unforeseen problems can occasionally arise, these inspections are carried out so that the pumps are ready when we need them,” Mr Rollinson said.
