Gannawarra Shire Council is making changes to car parking arrangements around Kerang South Primary School and the Kerang South Kindergarten to make it safer for children walking along Mitchell and Pay streets.

Following engagement with school and kindergarten management, the following changes will be introduced during June:

  • The bus zone outside of the school on Mitchell Street will be extended, with new paintwork making this area more visible for motorists.
  • Parking arrangements along Mitchell Street outside the Kerang South Kindergarten will change, with time limits in place during drop-off and pick-up times.
  • Three marked car parking spaces will be created on the northern side of Michell Street between Pay Street and the school crossing.
  • Defined “no parking” areas will be created at the southern end of Pay Street near the intersection of Mitchell Street.

“Council is pleased to be helping to improve pedestrian safety in a busy area of the municipality during school pick-up and drop-off time,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

“Kerang South Primary School staff, School Council members and kindergarten families have raised concerns regarding the current arrangements, highlighting the need to improve safety in an area that has seen traffic numbers increase in the past two years.”

The changes coincide with recent improvements to the former school crossing at Boundary Street, Kerang near Mitchell Street, which is now a permanent pedestrian crossing thanks to the Victorian Government through the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.

Council staff removed school crossing signage at the site this week, marking the site’s conversion to a permanent crossing.

“The improvements to the Boundary Street crossing now mean that motorists must stop at any time pedestrians are using this crossing, not just at school time,” Mr Rollinson said.

“Council thanks motorists and pedestrians for their understanding as we implement these changes.”
