Families are beginning to experience the Gannawarra’s third all abilities play space to be constructed in the past two years, with the Kerang All Abilities Play Space opened to the public at the weekend.
Located at Atkinson Park, the play space complements the popular playground by incorporating elements that people of all abilities can enjoy.
“The Kerang All Abilities Play Space adds to the attractions on offer for families visiting Atkinson Park, providing an experience for people of all abilities,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.
“The Kerang All Abilities Play Space will add to the popularity of the Sir John Gorton Precinct, which includes Atkinson Park, the Sir John Gorton Library and the Kerang Swimming Pool.”
Key features of the play space include in-ground trampolines, a log scramble area, water play areas and a wheelchair accessible sway fun swing.
“The completion of the Kerang All Abilities Play Space means that Kerang joins Cohuna and Koondrook to feature all abilities play spaces, providing residents and visitors greater opportunities for socialisation and physical activity,” Mr O’Reilly said.
Meanwhile, construction of the first Changing Places facility in the municipality – to be located at the Atkinson Park toilets – is on track for completion at the end of the month.
Featuring a height-adjustable adult-sized change table, ceiling track hoist system and a peninsular-structured toilet, the space will provide suitable facilities for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.
“Once completed, Kerang will join more than 200 other towns and cities nationally to feature a Changing Places facility, and will be the first town in northwestern Victoria to do so,” Mr O’Reilly said.
“This new facility will enable people to participate more fully in activities and events, and gives families the chance to participate in a family outing, without anyone being excluded.
“These works also include adding a unisex shower and sheltered rest area to the current amenities block, which will enhance facilities currently available to visitors passing through Kerang.”
The construction of the Kerang All Abilities Play Space and Changing Places facility is supported by a $1 million contribution from the State Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program.
“Council thanks the State Government and Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp MP for their support for this important project,” Mr O’Reilly said.
