Have your say on Council's draft Waste Management Strategy

Residents are encouraged to have their say on the draft Gannawarra Shire Council Resource Recovery and Waste Management Strategy 2025-2035, which will guide Council’s efforts in improving waste management and drive greater resource recovery across the Gannawarra.
Presented at the February 2026 Council meeting for endorsement to proceed to the community engagement stage, the draft strategy focuses on Council’s waste and recycling facilities and services, including how to continually improve the delivery of these services.
“This draft strategy highlights Council’s commitment to reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfill, as well as increasing the amount of waste recovered and repurposed,” Mayor Garner Smith said.
“This document focuses on Council’s waste and recycling facilities and services, including how to continually improve the delivery of these services for residents and businesses. It is designed to meet the needs of residents, businesses and the broader community, while remaining cost effective and future focused.”
Key features of the draft strategy include:
- An emphasis on education residents and businesses regarding correctly disposing of waste, as well as any changes to kerbside services.
- Pursuing partnerships with neighbouring councils and regional groups to share resources, attract funding, and address cross-boundary waste challenges.
- Building staff knowledge of circular economy principles and review procurement policies to support waste avoidance and green purchasing.
- Conducting regular reviews of waste services and infrastructure.
Residents can have their say on the draft Gannawarra Shire Council Resource Recovery and Waste Management Strategy 2025-2035 up to 5pm Thursday, 19 March in one of the following ways:

“All feedback received will assist with the development of the final version of the Gannawarra Shire Council Resource Recovery and Waste Management Strategy 2025-2035, which is to be presented to Council at a later date for approval,” Mayor Smith said.
