More than $1 million worth of accessibility developments to Kerang’s Sir John Gorton precinct will proceed thanks to funding from the State Government.

Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp announced earlier today that Council would receive $1 million from the Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program to construct an all abilities play space and Changing Places facility at Atkinson Park.

“The Sir John Gorton Precinct All Abilities Development will deliver a number of accessibility developments in the heart of Kerang, providing crucial infrastructure for people to participate in recreational activities and events, no matter their age or ability,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.

“This project will also support the Gannawarra’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic by encouraging visitors and tourists to spend more time in the area.”

The largest project to benefit from State Government funding is the construction of an all abilities play space at Atkinson Park, which will be the third facility of its kind to be built within the Gannawarra following works underway at Koondrook and planned at Cohuna.

“Atkinson Park is already a popular site for locals and visitors due to its various amenities, which include the town’s skate park, outdoor gym equipment, walking tracks, barbecues and public toilets, and the construction of an all abilities play space will enhance this popularity,” Mr O’Reilly said.

“Council will engage with the community regarding the proposed design of this new play space, which will be an area where families can play, no matter their age or abilities.”

The project will also involve the development of a Changing Places facility at Atkinson Park.

Featuring a height-adjustable adult-sized change table, ceiling track hoist system and a peninsular-structured toilet, the space will provide suitable facilities for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.

“The Changing Places facility will be the first of its kind to be constructed within the Gannawarra, with the closest facilities located at Bendigo and Echuca,” Mr O’Reilly said.

“This new facility will enable people to participate more fully in activities and events, and gives families the chance to participate in a family outing, without anyone being excluded.”

“Council thanks the State Government for their support for this project and looks forward to working with the Kerang community during the planning process for these new facilities.”

Accessibility improvements to Kerang’s Sir John Gorton precinct forms part of Council’s $16.197 million Capital Works program outlined in the 2021/2022 Budget.
