Visitors to Gannawarra Shire Council’s transfer stations are encouraged to dispose of their waste using the correct skip bins on-site.

A recent audit of waste disposed of at Council’s transfer stations, located at Cohuna, Kerang, Lalbert and Quambatook, found that items that cannot be recycled, such as timber and metal chairs, are being placed in skip bins marked for recycling purposes only.

“Council’s transfer stations are conveniently located throughout the municipality, enabling residents to dispose of materials, many of which are repurposed,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.

“When full, our transfer station recycling bins are transported to Veolia’s Materials Recovery Facility at Echuca for sorting. However, if non-recycling items are found in these skip bins, the bin is determined to be contaminated and all items inside are diverted to landfill.

“When this occurs, it is not just time consuming for staff at our facilities and at the Materials Recovery Facility, but it erodes the good work undertaken by visitors to our transfer stations to ensure they are recycling items correctly.”

Items that can be taken to Council’s transfer stations for recycling include cardboard, paper and cans, whilst household glass items can be placed in the purple skip bins located at each site.

“Signage is available at all of our transfer stations advising where items need to be placed, whilst anyone with any questions are encouraged to speak to our friendly staff on-site,” Mr O’Reilly said.
