The re-election of Cr Garner Smith as Gannawarra Shire Council Mayor for 2025/26 and Cr Ross Stanton as Deputy Mayor for the next 12 months was the highlight of Council’s November 2025 meeting.

Held at the Kerang Senior Citizens Centre on Wednesday, 19 November, proceedings began with the annual election of Council’s Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Cr Smith and Cr Stanton, who were both first elected to Council in 2020, were re-elected unopposed by their fellow Councillors to be Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively for the next 12 months.

The meeting also saw Councillors confirm meeting arrangements for 2026. Eleven meetings will be held next year between February and December, all occurring at The Glasshouse, Kerang on the third Wednesday of the month from 6pm. Residents are welcome to attend any of these meetings, which will be recorded and a video placed on Council’s website within 24 hours of the meeting’s conclusion.

Other outcomes of the meeting included:

  • The adoption of the following revised policies – Community Activities on Footpaths, Climate Change, Media, Mystic Park Cemetery Trust and Risk Management;
  • The rescinding of Policy No. 151 – Surrender of Land and endorsement of Policy No. 152 – Surrender of Land;
  • Receiving and noting the 2026/26 Quarterly Budget Report as of 30 September 2025;
  • Endorsing Council to commence to the next stage of legal action as outlined in section 181 of the Local Government Act to collect unpaid municipal rates. As part of this process, the affected landowners will be required to pay the outstanding rates or the properties will be sold; and
  • Adopting the list of committee memberships, and Councillor delegates or representatives to each, for 2025/26.

Questions from the public regarding access to the Cohuna community noticeboard, which is currently not accessible due to public safety concerns, were also addressed.
