The future of three Council-owned units at Quambatook was the major items of discussion at Gannawarra Shire Council’s May 2026 meeting.

Held at The Glasshouse, Kerang on 20 May, the meeting saw Council approve a recommendation to seek Expressions of Interest (EoI) regarding the future of a block of units located at 9-11 Guthrie Street, Quambatook.

As part of the community engagement process, community groups, organisations and private parties have the opportunity between 21 May and 5pm Friday, 24 July to provide an EoI, which may include proposals involving purchase, lease, community use or transfer of the asset.

Council may undertake further discussions or negotiations with shortlisted proponents following assessment of submissions received.

Other outcomes of the meeting included:

  • Receive and noting Council’s 2025/26 Quarterly Budget Report as of 31 March 2026, including the budget amendments for the financial year to date;
  • Resolving not to provide a rate subsidy to Respect Group Limited for rates charged on 115 King George Street, Cohuna, as the land is not exclusively used for charitable purposes, and request Policy No. 104 – Rates Subsidies be reviewed to ensure evaluation criteria for rates subsidies align with the intent of the policy , with a report to be presented to the July 2026 Council meeting;
  • Postpone making a decision regarding a planning application for the development of a service station and associated buildings at 9511 Murray Valley Highway, Kerang, subject to conditions, until after representatives from Council, Department of Transport and Planning, the project’s applicant and objector meet on-site to discuss turning lanes connecting the site to the highway;
  • Noting Council’s submission to the Murray-Darling Basin Authority Basin Plan Review 2026;
  • Appointing Mayor Garner Smith as Council’s substitute authorised delegate to the Municipal Association of Victoria State Council Meeting, occurring on Friday, 29 May;
  • The adoption of the Audit and Risk Committee Charter – Version 7; and
  • Endorsing Council to commence to the next stage of legal action as outlined in section 181 of the Local Government Act to collect unpaid municipal rates for 103 properties. As part of this process, the affected landowners will be required to pay the outstanding rates or the properties will be sold.
