Council Meeting Wrap - September 2023

Published on 21 September 2023

The awarding of five tenders valued at more than $3.1 million for repairs to flood-damaged roads was the highlight of Gannawarra Shire Council’s September 2023 meeting, held at the Kerang Senior Citizens Centre on 20 September 2023.

Councillors approved recommendations for three companies – Harril Pty Ltd, Northern Constructions Pty Ltd and RECivil Pty Ltd – to undertake repairs associated with 10 flood-damaged road repair packages funded via Commonwealth and State Government Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Meanwhile, guidelines relating to the calling of Unscheduled Meetings, consideration of Urgent Business, Tabling of Arbiters Decisions, Question Time guidelines and how a petition is processed will change following the adoption of changes to Council’s Governance Rules.

The proposed changes were presented to the August 2023 Council Meeting for feedback, with no responses received during a 14-day community engagement period.

Other outcomes of the meeting included:

  • Acknowledgement that Council’s offices will be closed from 2pm Friday, 22 December 2023 to Monday, 1 January 2024 for the Christmas and New Year holiday period, with normal services resuming Tuesday, 2 January 2024;
  • Resolving to retain the status of the unnamed road connecting Pratt Road to Robertson Road / West Road as unmaintained, and explore an alternative proposal to enhance accessibility for larger vehicles in the area utilising Pratt Road, in consultation with adjacent landowners and the individuals who have endorsed the petition calling on this unnamed road to be graded on an annual basis;
  • Approve the “in principle” 2023 Financial Statement and “in principle” 2023 Performance Statement;
  • Endorsing the reviewed Child Safe policy; and
  • Endorsing an amended Notice of Motion presented by Cr Smith to explore and develop opportunities to increase local access to locally produced renewable energy.
