A renowned Australian comedian and writer of the 2018 movie, The Merger will visit Quambatook in February to speak about the movie.

Damian Callinan will be the special guest at Quambatook Silo Cinema’s screening of the movie on Saturday, February 9.

The Merger, which stars Callinan, Kate Mulvany and John Howard, tells the story of a former professional Australian Rules footballer who returns to his country town after an abrupt end to his sporting career and is persuaded to coach the hapless local side, the Roosters.

The team, on the brink of merging with a neighbouring club, recruits players from the refugee community to boost its numbers.

“The Quambatook Silo Cinemas continues to increase in popularity, and Damian’s attendance at the February 9 event is credit to the work the community and event orgainsers put in to ensure each screening is a memorable experience,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.

Gannawarra Shire Council successfully applied for funding to support the evening through the Victorian Farmers Federation’s Look Over the Farm Gate initiative, which provides grants for community events and training for local champions to recognise and respond to distress.

Mental health workers and counsellors will be in attendance for those wishing to seek advice on services available in the community.

The Quambatook Football Netball Club and Gannawarra Refugee Support Network are also supporting the event, which forms part of the Quambatook Silo Cinema’s program of events for 2018/19.

Those attending the night are encouraged dress in their football attire or in a national costume.

Buses will be available for those travelling from Cohuna, Kerang and Swan Hill to the event, which begins at 8pm.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students/pensioners, with tickets available online at https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=454160&
