Waterfront jetties that encourage greater dining opportunities and interaction with Gunbower Creek, as well as piazza-style connections to the water, feature in the final design of the Cohuna Waterfront Connection Project.

Unveiled at the June 2021 Cohuna and District Progress Association meeting, the final design incorporates feedback provided by the community received during an extensive community engagement process.

“Council thanks all residents who engaged with Council during the initial engagement process earlier this year and the period following the release of the concept design back in April,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.

“The Cohuna Waterfront Connection Project, which forms part of the $3.4 million Cohuna CBD and Waterfront Connections project, will highlight Cohuna’s connection to the Gunbower Creek, creating a modern waterfront designed to inspire further commercial and liveability for both the locals and visitors.”

Many of the highlights that featured in the concept design - including the deck pontoon on the banks of Gunbower Creek, dedicated outdoor dining areas either side of the King George Street pedestrian crossing and a seated area at the intersection of King George and Sampson streets – have been retained.

“The Cohuna waterfront is a special place where residents and visitors can enjoy a meal, relax and take in Cohuna’s beauty,” Mr O’Reilly said.

“These new spaces will encourage the development of creative hospitality services that will take advantage of the waterfront dining options, which will attract more people to visit and potentially relocate to Cohuna.

“Some of Garden Park’s existing infrastructure, including the Major Mitchell cairn and the clock tower, will be relocated to other sections of Garden Park or other sites in Cohuna following further discussions with the community.”

Meanwhile, proposed changes to the car park adjacent to Island Road that featured in the concept design will not proceed at this time.

“The sound shell and car park will be retained for now, with Council to work with the community regarding retaining, upgrading or replacing these important pieces of community infrastructure,” Mr O’Reilly said.

“Council looks forward to keeping the community updated regarding this project.”
