Residents from across the Gannawarra who volunteer their time to various community efforts will be recognised this week as part of National Volunteer Week celebrations.

Occurring from Monday, 18 May to Sunday, 24 May, the week celebrates the dedication and impact of volunteers. This year’s theme, Your Year to Volunteer, also encourages people to make 2026 the year they step forward, get involved, and make a difference in their communities.

“Volunteers continue to play a vital role in strengthening local communities,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said

“Across the Gannawarra, volunteers give their time, skills and compassion to support community groups, sporting clubs, emergency services, health organisations and countless local initiatives.

“Their contributions help create connected, resilient and vibrant communities, and National Volunteer Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge and thank those who give so generously.”

As part of celebrations, Cohuna’s Garden Park and the Kerang Council Building will be illuminated in red as a visible tribute to volunteers across the region.

The Gateway to Gannawarra Visitor Centre will also recognise its dedicated volunteers during the week through a special internal gesture of thanks, acknowledging the time, knowledge and commitment they contribute to supporting visitors and showcasing the Gannawarra region.

Meanwhile, Northern District Community Health will recognise the contribution of the Gannawarra’s volunteers with two morning tea occurring at its Kerang and Cohuna headquarters. Festivities will be held at 24 Fitzroy Street, Kerang on Tuesday, 19 May from 10am, and 33 King Edward Street, Cohuna on Wednesday, 20 May from 10am. To book your spot, phone Northern District Community Health by phoning (03) 5451 0200.

“Whether you’ve been volunteering for decades or are considering getting involved for the first time, 2026 is your year to volunteer,” Mr Rollinson said.

There are various ways residents can volunteer in the Gannawarra, ranging from assisting at the Gateway to Gannawarra Visitor Centre, helping Northern District Community Health with its Meals on Wheels program or assisting the various community, service and sporting groups that warmly welcome volunteers to help with events and activities.
