The important role carers play in the community will be celebrated when Gannawarra hosts National Carers Week festivities later this month.

Occurring between 16-22 October, National Carers Week aims to bring attention to the 2.65 million carers across Australia who provide outstanding care and support to their loved ones.

“Carers play a vital role in providing unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental health condition, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or who are frail aged,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.

“The theme of National Carers Week 2022 is Millions of Reasons to Care, building on the work undertaken to promote the role carers play since the inaugural National Carers Week held in 1992.”

Locally, Council is partnering with Kerang District Health and Carers Support Services in hosting a free luncheon at the Kerang Senior Citizens Centre on Monday, 17 October from 12 noon.

“This luncheon will enable carers to meet and find out what support is available locally,” Mr O’Reilly said.

To RSVP, phone (03) 5450 9333 before 1pm Wednesday, 12 October.

Council also supports local carers via a Carers Support Group. Run in partnership with Kerang District Health, this group enables carers to meet, make new friends and share in the caring journey in a safe and confidential environment.

Carers Support Group meetings are held from 10am on the second Tuesday of each month at the Kerang Lion Club Den (45 Park Road, Kerang).
