Be mindful when constructing levees on your property
Published on 25 October 2022
Residents on rural properties within the Gannawarra Shire that could be impacted by flooding are advised to be aware of rules in place outlining where earthen or sandbag levees can be constructed.
With floodwaters from the Avoca and Loddon rivers making their way downstream into rural areas, rural properties may be impacted by these increased flows.
“During time of flood, residents are allowed to build earthen or sandbag levees to protect critical infrastructure on their properties, such as their homes,” Gannawarra Shire Council Acting Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.
“Building levees around other areas of your property or on neighbouring roads may protect your key assets, but it can impact on emergency services being able to access your property or neighbouring properties.
“These illegal levees can also be detrimental to other properties locally and downstream, so please be aware of these issues when assessing how to protect your property at this time.”
