Remember Your Pets These Holidays
Media Release
Gannawarra Shire Council is urging residents to remember their pets these Christmas and summer holidays.
Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said that over the holidays, Council receives an increased number of reports regarding roaming dog and noise complaints due to animals that have been left at home alone.
‘‘At this time of year, if your pet cannot be properly cared for while you are away, please ensure you put them into a boarding facility or arrange for someone to look after them,” said Mayor Learmonth.
“During the holidays we need to take extra steps to keep our pets cool, safe and healthy. Ensure pets have adequate water, food and shelter from the heat and are provided with toys to prevent problem behaviours such as roaming and barking,” explained Mayor Learmonth.
In addition, pet owners are urged to be aware that there would be fireworks at various New Year’s Eve celebrations across the Gannawarra Shire.
“We encourage pet owners to ensure their animals, especially dogs and horses, are secure and comfortable during fire work displays,” said Mayor Learmonth.
Further information on caring for your pet during firework displays is available from the RSPCA Victoria website -

“It is also important to ensure your personal details on your animal’s microchip record are up to date in the event your pet goes missing,” reminds Mayor Learmonth.
If you are unsure where your cat or dog‘s microchip record is registered visit

, contact Council or visit your local vet.
