HEALTHY SWIMMING COLOURING COMPETITION WINNER ANNOUNCED
Media Release

Gannawarra Shire Council would like to congratulate Taylor Lacy from Cohuna on his winning entry to the healthy swimming colouring competition.

Taylor has won a 10 visit pass to a local pool for next summer.

The Healthy Swimming Colouring Competition was aimed to raise awareness about keeping pools clean and safe.

Manager Community Health Narelle O’Donoghue says pool managers treat and maintain water quality to keep swimming pools clean, but there are simple things we can all do as a community to help keep pools pathogen-free and safe.

“Pathogens are microorganisms (bacteria, viruses and parasite) that can cause illness and these can be introduced to swimming pools and other recreational waterbodies when the water becomes contaminated,” Mrs O’Donoghue explains.

“Practicing good hygiene before swimming can prevent microbes on our bodies from contaminating pool water.”

Mayor Brian Gibson encourages the community to practice good hygiene before they jump in the pool for a swim.

“Simple things like not swimming if you have an upset tummy, washing your hands and body with soap before swimming and avoid swallowing pool water will make the swimming pools an enjoyable experience for the whole community,” Mayor Gibson said.

“Remember when you’re swimming, you’re sharing the water with everyone else swimming with you.”

Gannawarra Shire Council would like to remind residents that although the Kerang and Cohuna pools are closed for the 2016/2017 season and will reopen in November. The Kerang Exercise Pool remains open throughout the year.

“The Kerang exercise pool opens from 7.00am - 2.00 pm Monday, Wednesday and Fridays and 11.00am-3:00pm Tuesday and Thursdays” Mayor Gibson said.
