As part of the Gannawarra Library Service Book Week celebrations, Rohan Cleave, an award winning author, zoo keeper and conservationist will be visiting the Cohuna Library on Tuesday August 21, 2018.

The library will be hosting two separate author talks to celebrate Mr. Cleave’s visit and expertise. The first session, for local Year 3 and 4 students will take place at 12:00pm. The second session will be open to the general public and commence at 7:00pm.

Mr. Cleave, originally from Cohuna, is a zookeeper at Melbourne Zoo where he has been involved in the Lord Howe Island Stick Insect Recovery Breeding program since 2003. He now manages the program at Melbourne Zoo.

In addition to his role working with the stick insects, Mr. Cleave has worked with a number of different species including native mammals, ungulates, elephants, carnivores and invertebrates.

In 2015 Mr. Cleave wrote the non-fiction picture book ‘PHASMID: Saving the Lord Howe Island Stick Insect’ based on his work in conservation to save the species. The book is superbly illustrated by Coral Tulloch and reads in story format.

‘PHASMID: Saving the Lord Howe Island Stick Insect’ was the first children’s book to be produced by CSIRO Publishing and has received the following accolades:
•Honour Book, ‘The CBCA Eve Pownall Award for Information Books 2016’
•Shortlisted for ‘The Wilderness Society's Annual Environment Award for Children's
Literature 2016’
•Recipient of a ‘Whitley Award commendation for Children's Conservation Book 2016’

At the Cohuna event taking place during Book Week, Mr. Cleave will highlight the publishing side of his career; how he became a published author, his work with an award winning illustrator and the general writing process.

In April 2018 Mr. Cleave released his second book, ‘Bouncing Back: An Eastern Barred Bandicoot Story’.

Copies of both books will be available for purchase at the event and are available for loan through the Gannawarra Library Service.
