Grade six students from six Gannawarra Shire-based primary schools will be better prepared for the challenges of secondary school and teenage years thanks to participating in a rural primary school leadership program.

Gannawarra Shire Council is proud to host the Dream Seeds program, which will be run at five Gannawarra Shire-based primary schools between Monday, 1 March and Wednesday, 3 March.

Developed by Youthrive Victoria, the 90-minute sessions aim to build aspiration, resilience and connection for rural students leaving primary school.

“Council is pleased to provide funding to Youthrive Victoria to host these sessions, which build on Council’s goal to support young people to attend leadership development opportunities,” Mayor Charlie Gillingham said.

“The program’s original activities and games build knowledge and skills to help the young students create personal visions and practical pathways towards positive futures.”

More than 1100 Victorian students from 47 primary schools across regional Victoria have taken part in the program since it was piloted in 2016, with this year being the first time sessions will be held in the Gannawarra.

“Council recognises the efforts of former Gannawarra Shire Young Citizen of the Year, Stacey Barbagallo in bringing Dream Seeds to the municipality,” Mayor Gillingham said.

“Stacey was a driving force in bringing this program to our region.  Stacey is very passionate about the Gannawarra Shire and wanted to give back to her community by encouraging youth to aspire and live out their dreams.”

Dream Seeds sessions will be held on the following dates:

  • Monday, 1 March – St Joseph’s Primary School, Kerang (11.30am-1pm)
  • Tuesday, 2 March – Cohuna Consolidated School (9.15am-10.45am) and Kerang Primary School (12 noon-1.30pm)
  • Wednesday, 3 March – Kerang South Primary School (9.15am-10.45am) and Koondrook Primary School (12 noon-1.30pm). NOTE: Murrabit Group School students will attend the Koondrook Primary School session.
