Primary school students throughout the Gannawarra are encouraged to keep reading this summer thanks to the Big Summer Read program.

The Gannawarra Library Service is supporting the Public Libraries Victoria program, running from Wednesday, 1 December 2021 to Monday, 31 January 2022, which aims to keep children engaged in reading during the summer school holidays.

“The summer school holidays is a great time for children to enjoy a relaxing period with family and friends, and what better way is there than enjoying a good book,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.

“Whether it is enjoying a story from your home collection or from Gannawarra Library Service’s collection, reading during summer is a fun way to build on literacy skills developed during the school year.”

As part of the Big Summer Read, children will be able to keep track of the books they read via the Beanstack app or paper-based packs available for collection from library branches at Cohuna, Kerang, Leitchville and Quambatook.

“Children who participate will be in the running to win $100 gift vouchers from stores such as Toy World and Smiggle. A bonus entry will also be awarded to those who complete some fun challenges,” Mr O’Reilly said.

“Most importantly, the more you read, the more chances you have to win.”

Children can register to participate in the Big Summer Read from Monday, 8 November by downloading the Beanstack app, available from the Apple App or Google Play stores, or by contacting your local Gannawarra Library Service branch.

Sign-up sessions will also be held at the Cohuna Library on Wednesday, 24 November from 3.30pm to 4.30pm and Kerang’s Sir John Gorton Library on Thursday, 25 November from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.
