Residents are encouraged to have their say on Council’s Draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 2022-2025, with feedback accepted up to 5pm Friday, 2 September.

A requirement of the Domestic Animals Act 1994, the draft plan identifies Council’s responsibilities for education and compliance and provides a framework on how it will effectively manage its statutory responsibilities associated with domestic animal management.

“Council plays an important leadership role in supporting and promoting responsible pet ownership, community safety and active and healthy lifestyles,” Mayor Charlie Gillingham said.

“Council recognises that improved health and wellbeing can be attributed directly to animal ownership and understands the need to balance the requirements of the community, animal owners and the animal, that are such a significant part of many people’s lives.”

The Draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 2022-2025 features various actions covering 10 objectives, which include registration and identification, programs to promote and encourage responsible pet ownership, nuisance animals, dog attacks and training of authorised officers.

“The Draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 2022-2025 will be reviewed annually to ensure Council is adhering to the actions outlined in the document,” Mayor Gillingham said.

Residents are able to provide feedback on the document any time before 5pm Friday, 2 September by visiting www.gsc.vic.gov.au/yoursay and clicking on the Draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 2022-2025 link.

“All feedback received will assist Council with the development of the final version of the Domestic Animal Management Plan 2022-2025, which will be presented to Council in September,” Mayor Gillingham said.
