Commemorate ANZAC Day at home

Residents are encouraged to commemorate ANZAC Day at home this Saturday, 25 April.

Traditionally a milestone day for ex-servicemen and women and their families, services will not occur throughout the municipality following State and Federal government directives to stop the spread of Coronavirus.

“The Gannawarra is renowned for its ANZAC Day commemorations, which range from dawn services at Cohuna, Kerang and Koondrook/Barham to wreath laying ceremonies throughout the municipality,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.

“Although ANZAC Day commemorations cannot be held in the Gannawarra this year, we can all still stop and remember those who have served our country during times of conflict.”

Residents can pay their respects by taking part in the nationwide #STANDTO campaign, which involves standing in your driveway at 6am for a minute’s silence. Resources, including The Ode, The Last Post, a minute’s silence, and Reveille can be found via a link at www.facebook.com/rslvic/

“Residents can also pay their respects by watching the ABC’s broadcast of the ANZAC Day Services from across Australia and overseas, or take part in the Shrine of Remembrance’s ceremonies online by visiting www.shrine.org.au/Home,” Mayor Learmonth said.

“Councillors will also place wreaths at cenotaphs at Cohuna, Kerang, Koondrook/Barham, Leitchville and Murrabit on the day.”
