Children across the Gannawarra are encouraged to walk to and from school or their school bus pick-up point on Friday, 14 May as part of national Walk Safely to School Day celebrations.

Now in its 22nd year, National Walk Safely to School Day aims to promote safe pedestrian behaviour and the health benefits associated with walking, cycling or using a scooter to travel to and from school.

“All primary schools located within the Gannawarra have actively promoted the benefits associated with walking, cycling or using a scooter to travel to and from school through participating in the Gannawarra VicHealth Walk to School Program, but it is important to be aware of road and pedestrian safety around our schools all the time,” Mayor Charlie Gillingham said.

“Although the Gannawarra could not join schools across Australia in celebrating this initiative last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I encourage families and schools to help promote Walk Safely to School Day on 14 May.”

Schools can take part by visiting www.walk.com.au and incorporating some of the activities outlined for Friday, 14 May. These include hosting a healthy breakfast and encouraging parents and guardians who drive their children to school to park at least 10 minutes’ walk away from school.

“We all play a role in promoting pedestrian safety, whether it is being mindful when driving or educating children about road safety by demonstrating how to Stop, Look, Listen and Think whilst out in the community,” Mayor Gillingham said.

Walk Safely to School Day is an initiative of the Pedestrian Council of Australia. For more information, please visit www.walk.com.au
