An owl’s search for knowledge will inspire a week of events occurring throughout the Gannawarra Shire in mid-July.

Skilled theatre maker, puppeteer and workshop leader, Jenny Ellis will showcase her skills as part of The Owl’s Apprentice’s tour of the Gannawarra, starting with a performance at the Leitchville Memorial Hall on Friday, 12 July at 11.30am.

Council and the Leitchville community have united to put on what will be the major theatrical performance occurring locally these school holidays, with the show to appeal to children aged 12 years and under.

“Using a combination of shadow puppetry, hand puppetry and storytelling, The Owl’s Apprentice celebrates Australia’s unique wildlife through a gentle story of learning to become wise,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.

The Owl’s Apprentice performance builds on Council’s goal of supporting communities to run their own arts events and attracting visitors to smaller halls. It also introduces children to the joys of theatre and shadow puppets.”

Children who attend pre-schools that operate within the Gannawarra will also have the chance to experience the show during free performances at Cohuna and Kerang between Tuesday, 16 July and Thursday, 18 July.

Meanwhile, Ms Ellis will showcase her puppet making skills during two free Little Wing Puppets workshops, occurring at the Leitchville Rural Transaction Centre on Friday, 12 July at 1pm and Kerang’s Sir John Gorton Library on Monday, 15 July at 4pm.

“This is a special treat for local children, with those in attendance to learn a range of skills to make their own shows, as well as a puppet they can take home,” Mayor Learmonth said.
