Residents are encouraged to provide feedback on the proposed design of Cohuna’s All Abilities Adventure Playground.

To be constructed south of the current playground at Apex Park, the new playground will complement improvements to Apex Park completed recently, including the creation of Cohuna Beach, development of new barbecue areas and the installation of shelters.

“Council was pleased to work with the project’s architect and the community during the past few months to gather ideas regarding this new space, which will be another attraction for residents and visitors to enjoy,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.

“Working with residents and local schools, the architect received more than 200 completed surveys, requesting features such as accessible play equipment for all abilities, fencing between the playground and Cohuna Island Road, water play elements and seating to be incorporated.

“Thanks to this feedback, the architect has developed a design that incorporates these features, as well as elements that pay homage to Cohuna and the Gannawarra.”

Key features of the Cohuna All Abilities Adventure Playground include a stand-up see saw that pumps water into a water channel, a three-storey play area designed as an old farm shack, climbing areas and flying fox, all located along a pathway that replicates Gunbower Creek.

All abilities features incorporated into the design include a triple swing, carousel, in-ground trampoline, roller spinner and an accessible harness seat on the flying fox.

“Once complete, the Cohuna All Abilities Playground will be a space where children of all ages and abilities will play for many years to come,” Mr O’Reilly said.

The current playground at Apex Park will remain in place during the construction of the Cohuna All Abilities Playground, but will be removed once this project is complete.

“Council appreciates and congratulates the efforts of the Cohuna Playgroup in fundraising and seeking support from the Cohuna and District Progress Association, Lions Club of Cohuna, Apex Club of Cohuna and other community donations to support the construction of the current playground, opened in 2003, which has seen years of enjoyment by local and visiting children and their families,” Mr O’Reilly said.

The Cohuna All Abilities Adventure Playground forms part of the $3.4 million Cohuna CBD and Waterfront Connections project, supported by the State Government’s $2.7 billion Building Works package.
