| The Fairley Bael Bael Sandhill Lake Landcare Group recently received funding from a 2nd Generation Landcare Grant for a bus trip to meet other Landcare groups and view their projects. They decided on a two-day trip that would take them through the Grampians. The Fairley Bael Bael Sandhill Lake Landcare Group also invited members from the Kerang Landcare Group to join them on the trip.
In total, 37 adults and children participated in the bus trip, which began in Kerang and headed first to Mount Buckrabanyule in the Loddon Shire, where the Wychitella District Landcare Group is conducting a project on Wheel Cacti.
The group then met up with Kevin Spence, Landcare Coordinator for the Northern Grampians and Buloke Shires, and Lindsay Ezard, a project officer with the Department of Primary Industries, and headed south through the Northern Grampians Landcare area. The group then toured some of the fenced erosion control and revegetation Landcare projects on hills, valleys, gullies and lower slopes of the catchment area.
“It was very interesting to view other Landcare Group’s projects as many of the groups focus on very different environmental outcomes than our group. It provided us with insights into different ways of accomplishing projects,” said Cindy Boyd, Treasurer for the Fairley Bael Bael Sandhill Lake Landcare Group.
The group stayed overnight at Halls Gap and, the following morning, observed a control method for Bridal Creeper. Rust spores of infected Bridal Creeper plants were collected, mixed with water and then sprayed onto the unaffected plants. The group was informed that this can be an effective control method for Bridal Creeper in some areas but in other areas control methods such as leaf hoppers have the potential to obtain more significant results.
“It was terrific to invite another Landcare group along on this trip. The opportunity to socialise and understand the different focus of both groups was beneficial to all,” said Tim Nitschke of the Kerang Landcare Group
The Fairley Bael Bael Sandhill Lake Landcare Group would like to thank all speakers and guides for the two days. Their enthusiasm and extensive knowledge is to be admired. The group would also like to thank all who participated in the bus trip and made it a success.
