| Council promotes responsible pet ownership. To this end Council controls animals as required by the Domestic (Feral and Nuisance) Animals Act 1994. Council requires all cats and dogs within the Shire to be registered after the age of three months. Council also imposes limits on the number of animals kept in the urban area. | |

| Animal Microchipping | | Council strongly supports microchipping. A microchip is a permanent form of animal identification and unlike a collar or tag, a microchip cannot be lost. If your pet/s have already been microchipped (desexed or not) they attract the base registration fee.
After 1 May 2007 Council will be unable, by law, to register a new (not previously registered) dog or cat that has not been implanted with a microchip. Dogs and cats that move into the Municipality and that have been previously registered in another Municipality are considered to be 'new'.
| State Government Levy | | Per Dog $2.50 Per Cat $1.00
The State Government Levy is additional to the Council's Animal Registration fees. Council is required to collect the Levy on behalf of the Government and the Levy is to be used primarily to fund responsible pet ownership programs.
| On the spot fines now apply |
| Unregistered dog / cat. | | Dog / cat outside owner's premises without a registration marker. | | Dog found wandering at large. | | Dog / cat on private property without permission. | | Dog / cat creating a nuisance. | | Dogs in schools or shops. | | Greyhound not muzzled or under effective control while outside the premises of its owners. | | Dog / cat not on leash in an urban area. |
|
|
| Impound Dog / Cat | | Any dog or cat found wandering at large will be impounded. These may be claimed by contacting the Shire Offices in either Cohuna on 03 5456 5222 or Kerang on 03 5450 9333.
Payment of a release fee of $30 (+GST)will be required and a sustenance fee may be applicable. Unclaimed animals will be disposed of after eight (8) days.
| Keeping of Dogs and Cats | | The registration of any dog / cat is subject to compliance with the Domestic (Feral and Nuisance) Animals Act 1994. Council's Local Law restrict the number of dogs / cats permitted to be kept in residential zones to two each, without Council permission. | |
