| Stage 1 Heritage Study Completed | | In October 2007 Council appointed Robyn Ballinger to undertake a Heritage Study Stage 1 of the whole Gannawarra Shire. The project was funded by Heritage Victoria and Council and work commenced in November 2007. The aim of the Study was to identify the key post European settlement themes that provide an explanation of the situation that exists today. The process of completing the Thematic History included research of a comprehensive list of printed materials. Additionally many discussions with interested members of the community were held throughout the process. These occurred at eight community meetings held in different locations around the Shire and through direct contact with a significant number of individuals and groups with particular interest in and knowledge of heritage matters. A number of community members filled in and returned data sheets identifying places of potential heritage interest and provided feedback on the draft history. The contributions of the many members of the community who provided help throughout the process are greatly appreciated.
In addition to researching and writing the Thematic History many places of potential heritage interest have been identified, recorded and photographed. In the next stage of the Heritage Study process selected places from the compiled list will be assessed further to identify their level of heritage value. This will be done against standard criteria and importantly will be in consultation with property owners.
Early this year the final version of the Thematic History for Stage 1 was produced and the Stage 1 process has been completed on schedule.
