| Mayor's Message | | For the first time in years, we’ve had a decent autumn break. That was very evident around the end of last month and early this month. If, like me, you took a drive out Lalbert/Quambatook way after dark you would have been amazed by all the lights. It really seemed as if there was a tractor in every paddock.
It looks as if the croppers are likely to get a good return on this season’s crop. That’s great news and we’re all hoping that the promise of a good crop eventuates.
But none of us are getting carried away with optimism.
The drought is by no means over, no matter how green it looks. There has been no run off to speak of as yet. Dams and catchments are still empty or close to empty, and many irrigators are still facing the possibility of having a zero water allocation.
That reality aside, there’s no doubt that there is a much greater sense of optimism across the Shire than there was in, say, January/February when we distributed the last Drought Newsletter. We “Gannawarrians” are a resilient bunch.
Optimism, good spirits and resilience were evident at the recent ‘True Blue Drought Concert’, at which I hope you were in attendance. The concert was a triumph of hard work and good spirit. So many people had a hand in making the Concert such a huge success: Council staff; sponsors; the organising committee; community groups; retailers who supported the event with sales, music and window displays; the media; stage technicians; and, of course, the musicians, all of whom added a special something.
Thank you all.
