YOUTH ARTS FESTIVAL

MEDIA RELEASE

Gannawarra is set to hold their first ‘Warra Youth Arts Festival in December celebrating and encouraging youth creativity.

The concept was developed by the Youth Council Committee and the festival was developed into an exciting and broad program by Kerang Technical High School students, Emma Thompson and Carmen Baulch.

‘Warra Youth Arts Festival Committee member, Carmen Baulch, says the festival is an exciting opportunity for local young people to express their creativity.

"We’ve made a program that has something for everyone, drawing on skilled workshop leaders from Melbourne and Gannawarra. Young artists can exhibit their works and participate in the painting workshop and Insta meet. Young musicians can take part in Making Music and African Drumming with opportunities to perform. Our young writers can be creative with slam poetry and song writing," Carmen explains.

The ‘Warra Youth Arts Festival will run on 11, 12, 15 and 16 December 2017 at the Kerang Memorial Hall and give young people aged 12 - 25 the opportunity to participate in free workshops where they can also try something totally new.

On Saturday night, 16 December, the community is invited to the Festival Finale where family and friends can enjoy an evening of youth performances and street food.

Council’s Director Community Wellbeing, Stacy Williams, said the Warra Youth Arts Festival is inspiring.

"Our young leaders have worked hard to get it happening. We are so proud to support them with their ideas and reward their efforts. This festival builds their capacity to plan, develop and deliver events to a local audience."

"Not only does this Festival allow local young people the opportunity to be creative and participate in arts, it enables Council to support the Gannawarra communities’ goals of holding more events for young people", Mrs Williams said.

As part of the ‘Warra Youth Arts Festival an exhibition of young aspiring artists’ works will be on display from Wednesday 29 November 2017 until 06 February 2018 in Patchell Plaza Kerang, with an official opening event on Friday 15 December.
