Gannawarra Shire Council has approved Waterfront Development Masterplans for three locations within the Shire.

Developed by Urban Enterprise, the Masterplans focus on the Gunbower Creek precinct at Cohuna, the Murray River precinct at Koondrook and the Kerang Lakes (Kangaroo Lake and Lake Charm).

“The Gannawarra Waterfront Masterplans prepared through this project aim to identify projects that will lead to strong economic development outcomes for Gannawarra Shire, maximising tourism, recreation, commercial and residential opportunities,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.

“The Masterplans were prepared based on feedback gathered from the Concept Plan Discussion Paper which went out for community consultation in May 2018 and submissions received whilst draft documentation was out for public comment earlier this year.”

A total of 21 submissions were received during the public comment period, with the majority focusing on the Masterplan for the Gunbower Creek precinct at Cohuna – specifically the Cohuna Swimming Pool and retaining the RV Park in its current location.

“Many of the submissions expressed strong views to maintain the wide open views around the Gunbower Creek in Cohuna and the importance of keeping the waterfront free from fixed infrastructure,” Mayor Learmonth said.

Feedback received relating to the Kerang Lakes Waterfront Masterplan focused on the maintenance of the proposed infrastructure and the need for improved walking tracks and trails, whilst those who commented on the Koondrook Waterfront Masterplan identified the need for additional parking at the Koondrook boat ramp.

“The Gannawarra Waterfront Masterplans will be used to develop and guide projects to meet the needs of the Council Plan and Regional Plans and will be an exciting and transformational time for Council and the communities,” Mayor Learmonth said.

“I would like to thank everyone who put together a submission relating to these Masterplans.”
