Motorists are advised that traffic along Victoria Street, Kerang may be affected on Sunday, February 17 as arborists remove a Manna Gum from outside Gannawarra Shire Council’s Kerang Council Chambers.

Council approved the proposal to remove the gum in November 2018 after investigations conducted by two independent arborists found that the tree needed to be removed due to public safety concerns.

“Although the tree is not historically significant, it has been a feature within Victoria Street and an important source of shade,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.

“Unfortunately both arborists indicated that the tree is not suitable for sculpting in-situ given the low durability of this species of timber.”

The top section of the tree was removed in December 2018, with the remaining portion of the tree to be placed in storage at Council’s Kerang depot and utilised in a yet to be determined project.

“Council will be planting a mature tree to replace the Manna Gum when the conditions are suitable for planting,” Mayor Learmonth said.

“Council thanks the community for their patience as these works occur.”
