STORY ISLAND: AN ADVENTURE IN PICTURES
mEDIA RELEASE

An exhibition like no other is coming to the Sir John Gorton Library and features a space for reading, imaginative sharing, learning and exploring stories and pictures together.

Manager Library Services Kerri Sidorow said the library is proud to be able to host this unique exhibition, Story Island – An Adventure in Pictures.

“Story Island is a joint initiative of State Library Victoria and Public Libraries Victoria Network to promote the development of Early Years literacy skills, which is something we are very passionate about here in Gannawarra,” Ms Sidorow says.

Opening on Friday 14 July, let the exhibition take you on a journey from bath-time to bed-time! It is a welcoming space featuring four custom-made pods which evoke stories of the bush, the city, bath and bed time.

“The exhibition structure supports a child’s natural desire for free-roaming with images and text at different sight levels and activities of various complexities embedded in the design,” Ms Sidorow explains.

“The process of ‘making meaning’ is key to literacy, and the activities allow meaning to be made through a variety of imaginative, kinaesthetic, sensory and verbal experiences. Together they encourage a shared journey between the child and carer to view the illustrations, participate and talk together.”

Mayor Brian Gibson says he hopes that participants will be inspired to find many other wonderful children’s books in their local library’s collection.

“I strongly encourage all community members, but particularly those with young children, to come along and see this exhibition. We hope that it excites and opens up young minds to the opportunities at their local library and encourages them to enjoy books and reading.”

The exhibition will be officially opened on Monday July 17 at 2.00pm, and remain open until August 25.  Families with children of all ages, including infants and toddlers are encouraged to come and explore and share this special event.
