A $504,000 project to construct sections of permanent levee bank in Quambatook has been successful in obtaining funding through the National Disaster Resilience Grants Scheme (NDRGS).

Director Infrastructure and Development Geoff Rollinson, said the Quambatook Township Flood Mitigation Works project was an identified recommendation from the Quambatook Flood Management Plan.

“The January 2011 flood event was the largest on record with approximately 3km of emergency temporary levee bank constructed to protect the township of Quambatook,” Mr Rollinson explained.

“If no emergency action had been taken, the township would have been inundated, resulting in evacuation and up to $10 million in structural and economic damage.”

The half a million dollar project is being supported by all levels of government with $125,000 from the Federal NDRGS program, $125,000 from the Department Environment, Land, Water and Planning and $254,000 from Gannawarra Shire Council.

“Stage one of the project works will consist of constructing an earthen levee approximately 1 metre in height from the railway line to the Kerang-Quambatook Road.”

“Stage Two works will include constructing a levee from Ninyeunook Road bend, east of the lawn cemetery, to meet with the railway line. The Stage Two work is subject to future funding commitments which Council will be seeking,” Mr Rollinson explained.

This funding outcome is warmly welcomed by Council and will provide security from future flood events, including significantly reducing demand for an emergency response, including volunteers, in the instance of future flood events, providing the township of Quambatook with increased emergency management capability and capacity.

The works are expected to commence in November 2017.
