People living, working and studying in the Mallee had a chance to share their thoughts and provide ideas about local opportunities and challenges that span every government portfolio.

Over 120 people attended the Mallee Regional Assembly in Swan Hill on Thursday evening, including a strong cohort from Gannawarra, which included the Mayor, Councillors, CEO and community members.

Mayor Brian Gibson said the Mallee Regional Assembly is our voice into the heart of Victorian Government.

“Following the inaugural Assembly held in Mildura last year the Regional Partnership has been developing priority projects what will help transform the Mallee, support its communities and help its businesses to grow,” Mayor Gibson explains.

“This year’s Assembly aimed to dig a little bit deeper into what the key issues and opportunities are, so the format was broken up into discussion tables about key topics including Road, Rail and Air, Food and Water, Small Town Futures, Lifestyle and Tourism, Health and Wellbeing, Education and Training.”

“By doing this, some robust conversation was able to be held with other local leaders and Members of Parliament that were in attendance.”

In addition, at last night’s Assembly Gannawarra was able to launch the Murray Explored video, showcasing the incredible work that was undertaken back in February by a team of scientists from Museum Victoria, supported by Parks Victoria and NCCMA staff, who undertook a survey of the area 160 years after William Blandowski originally walked the land.

Minister for Regional Development Jaala Pulford says people from all over the Mallee region flocked to our Regional Assembly last December.

“I’m excited to be in the Mallee to again listen to the local community and to make sure we are getting things right for this community.”

The Mallee Regional Partnership includes the shires of Buloke, Gannawarra, Mildura and Swan Hill.

Each of the nine Regional Partnerships will have the opportunity to host a major community assembly which will include the public, Members of Parliament, business and community leaders coming together to discuss priorities for each region.
