Learn to Swim classes will be available for children in early January at the Kerang Swimming Pool.

Mayor Brian Gibson said the Learn to Swim program is a perfect opportunity to introduce your children to water, improve swimming ability and increase their confidence and skills in the water.

"With summer here and weather gradually warming up water safety is paramount in the area like Gannawarra," Mayor Gibson said.

"We are surrounded by lakes and Rivers and many people have backyard pools so it's never too early to teach our children about the importance of water safety and the skill of swimming."

the 2015/16 Victorian Drowning Report presented by Lifesaving Victoria presents some astounding figures relating to cases of drowning. Children aged 0 to 4 years still have the greatest overall risk of drowning with the highest age-specific rate of both fatal and non-fatal drowning's.

"Providing an opportunity to our youngest residents to Learn to Swim is a way that Council can assist in the learning process and improving young children's skills around water. I can't stress enough how important water safety is," Mayor Gibson reiterated.

Learn to Swim classes will run from 3 January - 13 January 2017 at the Kerang Swimming Pool with sessions times between 9am- 11am. The program is targeted for children in Pre-School and Primary School with small class sizes available.
