Local women are encouraged to try something new and get active as part of VicHealth’s inaugural This Girl Can Week.

Running from Monday, 18 March to Sunday, 24 March, This Girl Can Week aims to encourage more women to give physical activity a go, or return to exercise after a break.

As part of the celebrations, Gannawarra Shire Council will support a range of fun, free or low-cost activities tailored to women and girls who want to get active but aren’t sure about how to take the first step, thanks to a $14,471 VicHealth grant to promote This Girl Can – Victoria.

“Gannawarra Shire Council is proud to work with VicHealth during This Girl Can Week to encourage local women and girls to smash the stereotypes holding them back from getting active and have a go,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.

“There’ll be a range of fun and inclusive activities at local gyms, community groups and sports clubs that will help women take that first and often daunting step to being active.

“I encourage women and girls to get involved in the local events taking place and show that in Gannawarra this girl definitely can!”

First held in March 2018, the This Girl Can – Victoria campaign features everyday Victorian women instead of professional athletes or airbrushed Instagram models, and aims to empower women to feel comfortable in their bodies and in public spaces – regardless of their ability, how they look or how sweaty they get.

“We want all women, no matter how sweaty they get, how red their face is or how good they are, to feel comfortable about getting out there and giving physical activity a go. That’s what This Girl Can – Victoria is all about,” VicHealth CEO, Jerril Rechter said.

“We want women living in the Gannawarra Shire to know that we get it. Rocking up to a gym class or training session is tough when you don’t know what to expect.

“That’s why the activities during This Girl Can Week will be inclusive, non-judgemental and accessible for women of different ages, body shapes and abilities.”

Details regarding local This Girl Can Week events will be updated regularly on Council’s Facebook page.
