What is Youth Council?

The Gannawarra Shire Youth Council consists of young people, aged between 15 and 18 who want to make a difference to their communities. Young people attend eight meetings per year, four held during school hours and four after hours. Students participate from Kerang Technical High School, Kerang Christian College, Cohuna Secondary College and Barham High School. There are also a number of positions on Youth Council for young people who are not engaged in mainstream education.

In 2016 Youth Council aims to raise the profile of young people, promoting positive stories of young people and their achievements. Youth Council also wants to try to tackle boredom which was identified in the Children & Youth Strategy, as the number one issue of concern for young people in Gannawarra. They are looking at running a number of events, including a Youth Arts Festival and a Zine Workshop. They are also offering a Food Handlers Certificate for young people, which will be held in Kerang on Wednesday 6 July. Participating in Youth Council helps develop confidence, leadership, public speaking and teamwork skills, as well as developing a sense of community pride and belonging.
